Content

The Degree Programme in International Business enables students to develop expertise required in global business. The main focus of the studies is on international marketing as a part of successful business. Throughout the studies, students work in cross-cultural teams and develop their professional business expertise. Studying in a multicultural environment in close cooperation with companies develops intercultural communication and interaction skills. BBA graduates work in assistant and expert positions for example in export business, marketing, sales, finance, administration or as entrepreneurs.

Targets:
You can pronounce Finnish in an understandable manner. You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You are able to use the basic vocabulary and grammar to express your own ideas in elementary everyday situations. You can ask and answer to basic questions. You are able to tell about yourself and use polite phrases and greetings in everyday situations, e.g. meeting friends, asking about the price and ordering.

The study unit includes:
- Finnish alphabet, consonants, vowels and diphthongs
- Pronunciation
- Sharing personal information: e.g. name, nationality, language skills, family, hobbies, studies
- Numbers and expressions of time
- Basic grammar: e.g. the word order, the verbtypes and the conjugation of verbs, partitive case, polar questions and common interrogatives.

52 hours of contact teaching + 83 hours of independent work.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is mainly based on the final exam, where speaking, writing, listening and reading skills are tested. Active participation during the lessons, the vocabulary tests and the homework are also stressed.

Students' skills in spoken and written business communication will be assessed in different assignments during the course. The student must submit evidence of his/her business communication skills by the end of the course. There will be another possibility for retake the course in May and another in late August 2024.

Completion alternatives

The student who has the required skills that s/he has acquired through formal studies in a higher education institution or by working in a diverse workplace in international business can apply for RPL. Such a student must contact the teacher in charge of the study unit in advance.

This gives a possibility to crystallize students’ own business ideas or develop product and service ideas. After passing the course, the student understands the different sections of innovative business. Also, the student has the capability to learn and enforce new product development methods and use these skills for producing innovative business/service entities. The course provides possibilities to learn new skills related to social media and later utilize these skills in business. Possibilities for new network contacts increase during the course.

Students who have acquired relevant experience and required practical competence through their work in diverse work communities in international organisations can complete the course by demonstrating their familiarity with the theoretical aspects of intercultural management in an Exam. The RPL Proof of Competence process requires the student to contact the teacher in advance and present testimonials from their previous employers.

The course on Intercultural Management builds upon the first semester-course on Intercultural Communication, which together with Introduction to Business should be completed prior to Intercultural Management. However, students with corresponding knowledge acquired elsewhere can take this course.

Your knowledge of intercultural management is assessed in an exam, which makes 60% of the final grade. The group work and individual assignments contribute to the final grade by 40%.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

The student is not able to show sufficient familiarity with the basic theoretical aspects of intercultural management in the exam and/or has not taken part in class discussions or workshops to demonstrate his/her ability to apply theoretical knowledge into case studies and simulations.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student is familiar with the theoretical aspects of intercultural management and has proven his/her knowledge in the exam. The student has been active during the class discussions and workshops and has been able to demonstrate his/her ability to apply theoretical knowledge into case studies and simulations.

Teaching methods

The course helps you understand the marketing practices of companies seeking market opportunities outside their home country. During the course, you will familiarise yourself with planning effectively for the marketing of consumer and business needs and wants on an international level. From a strategic standpoint, you will identify the importance of viewing marketing management strategies from a global perspective. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing a plan and conducting research, as well as understanding cultural and environmental aspects of international trade and the integration of culture and marketing functions.

International market research course helps you assess opportunities, mitigate risk, and create and capture value for your business. Explore the economic, political and social factors driving change and learn how decisions affect global markets and your business.

Student workload

The work is implemented in a team of max 5 students, resulting in a report of at least 20 pages (max. 30 pages) and a PowerPoint presentation for 20 minutes.

This study module includes advanced Marketing and Management studies in the field of International Business. Students tailor the contents of the studies based on their interests and career plans. Studies can be accomplished in many ways, for instance by the complementary studies organised by Karelia University of Applied Sciences, by attending courses in partner institutions of Higher Education, as a part of the student exchange or as a different type of projects either for a company or a non-profit organisation. An additional option is the entrepreneurship path, in which students develop own business plan/company. The planning of the contents of these studies as well as approval of the plan takes place in the context of the course Career Planning and Development.

Objective

The course prepares the student for the YKI test. The student will know the structure and the answering technique of the YKI test. The student will be able to:
- find main ideas and key details in speech and text dealing with recurring themes at school, work or leisure
- communicate in the most common everyday situations and in informal conversations.
- use a fairly wide range of everyday vocabulary and some common phrases.
- use a variety of structures and write clear and coherent texts that follow the conventions of the genre.

Content

The course includes:
- reacting in everyday communication situations
- reading and writing a variety of texts at B1 level
- grammar at B1 level: e.g. plurals, tenses, sentence types, object, rections, conjunctions

Location and time

The course starts 15.1. and ends 10.5.2024. There are two online meetings per week on Mondays and on Wednesdays at 12.45-14.15 pm.

Teaching methods

The course covers the grammar, vocabulary and texts that you need to know for the YKI test. The course is online, with two meetings per week.

Objective

On completion of the course you can pronounce, read and write (by hand) Russian. You will cope orally with simple and routine situations, for example, introduce yourself and others, and shortly describe your own background and immediate needs. You can answer simple questions about yourself and ask similar questions of others using polite language appropriate to the language culture. You know how to write short, simple messages: a small personal biography, a description of the day's activities, a postcard from your travels and a short description of the services available in the locality. You can understand short, simple written messages on the topics of the course. You understand the core content of short dialogues presented in a clear manner.

You will study and learn the basics of Russian both in class and independently.

In class, you will practice small everyday situations with a partner, in small groups and independently. The activities will strengthen your speaking and listening skills. In addition to face-to-face learning, you will complete weekly reading, writing and information retrieval tasks, where you will apply the skills acquired in face-to-face learning. You will also reflect on your own studying and learning.
