Objective

After the course, you know the basic rules of grammar and general vocabulary. You are able to write short texts in English. You are able to participate in compulsory language courses in the university of applied sciences.

Location and time

The course is implemented as an online course three times per academic year.

Assessment as defined in the Degree Regulations of Karelia UAS.
Students must enroll in Moodle within one week from the starting date. Starting the course after this is not possible.

The course is recommended for those students who are in the beginning of their studies and who need to review the basic structures and vocabulary.

After the course, you know the basic rules of grammar and general vocabulary.

- General vocabulary

Student workload

The extent of the course is 3 ECTS which requires 80 hours of student's work. We recommend starting the course as soon as the course environment is available and booking the time for study in your calendar. There are no lectures in this course.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The course proceeds one assignment at a time. Each assignment must be passed in order to access the next one. After completing the final assignment and the giving the course feedback, the student has passed the course.

Objective

The objective of course for the international tutoring is to strengthen the student's team guidance and performance skills and to provide the capacity to operate in a multicultural environment. The aim is also to strengthen your professional competence through your core competence and to create networks. The student can also develop their own language skills and their organizational capacity during the course.

Content

The course of international tutoring includes one credit (1 ECTS) of tutoring trainings. The training will cover practical matters related to tutoring and practice group guidance skills. The credits 2-5 come according to the tutoring hours accumulated from the tutoring duties during the academic year.
A record of the course is given according to the approved and accumulated hours when the student has returned a diary of their duties as tutor and a report on their learning experience to the Student Union POKA specialist. If requested, the tutor receives a certificate from the POKA specialist.
When a student is trained as a peer tutor and in their duties, they promotes their professional development and cooperation skills and builds their network of people. They develops their steering skills, strengthens their ability to take responsibility and grows in the role of a representative and strengthens their ability to work in management positions.

You will be able to speak and write in a variety of situations at work, e.g. customer service, making appointments, meetings and negotiations, and chatting with colleagues. You can tell about your work and profession and understand texts and speech about work. You understand work-related instructions and can write the most important work-related texts.

You will be familiar with the German-language press and magazines in your own field. You will deepen your knowledge and extend vocabulary of your own field of study. Learning takes place independently online. Final discussion (1h) with the teacher in August at a mutually agreed time.

- The selected articles are of a good level, the tasks are done carefully, the final discussion is mainly in Finnish, but introductions and interactions are also in German, even if the content of the articles cannot be discussed.

- The selected articles are on a demanding level, the assignments are completed carefully and thoroughly, the final discussion is mainly in German.

- encounter a pain patient in healthcare and recognize the importance of interaction
- to guide different means to manage pain beside the usual care
- describe the basics on pain physiology and how pain is experienced.

The main contents of the course are:
- The importance of interaction and encountering the patient in pain management
- Definition of pain and transmission of pain signals
- Basics of acute pain management
- How pain becomes chronic and chronic pain management.
- Non-pharmacological pain regulation methods as a support for medication and other treatments

The student can present Karelia UAS as a study place and tell about the education to target audiences. They present Karelia UAS fluently in different situations and delivers information to potential applicants about Karelia UAS study possibilities. They can also utilize social media channels to reach the audience and interact with them.

Content

The student orientates themself to ambassador’s task by learning about Karelia UAS, study possibilities and degree programmes. Furthermore they learn to know marketing practices, social media practices, giving presentations and presentation tasks. At the end of acting as an ambassador, the student reports and evaluates their work and gives recommendations for the development of the activity.

Objective

The objective of course for the international tutoring is to strengthen the student's team guidance and performance skills and to provide the capacity to operate in a multicultural environment. The aim is also to strengthen your professional competence through your core competence and to create networks. The student can also develop their own language skills and their organizational capacity during the course.

Content

The course of international tutoring includes one credit (1 ECTS) of tutoring trainings. The training will cover practical matters related to tutoring and practice group guidance skills. The credits 2-5 come according to the tutoring hours accumulated from the tutoring duties during the academic year.

A record of the course is given according to the approved and accumulated hours when the student has returned a diary of their duties as tutor and a report on their learning experience to the Student Union POKA specialist. If requested, the tutor receives a certificate from the POKA specialist.

When a student is trained as a peer tutor and in their duties, they promotes their professional development and cooperation skills and builds their network of people. They develops their steering skills, strengthens their ability to take responsibility and grows in the role of a representative and strengthens their ability to work in management positions.

Objective

You understand different types of discussions. You are able to understand spoken language and different dialects. You can use phrases of spoken language. You are able to participate in different types of discussions in Finnish.

Content

- You participate in discussions on various topics, e.g. food trends and traditional dishes, distance work, and plans for the holiday.
- You get familiar with the materials and vocabulary given and study Finnish phrases.
- You do exercises and write short texts based on the topics of the discussions.

Teaching methods

Language Café 2 is for students whose mother tongue is not Finnish. The language level of the course is B1.

The course is a speaking course. Each class consists of small group discussions on a specific topic.

The course takes place online in Zoom. You cannot do the course independently, you must attend the meetings online.
