Objective

The objective of course for the international tutoring is to strengthen the student's team guidance and performance skills and to provide the capacity to operate in a multicultural environment. The aim is also to strengthen your professional competence through your core competence and to create networks. The student can also develop their own language skills and their organizational capacity during the course.

Content

The course of international tutoring includes one credit (1 ECTS) of tutoring trainings. The training will cover practical matters related to tutoring and practice group guidance skills. The credits 2-5 come according to the tutoring hours accumulated from the tutoring duties during the academic year.
A record of the course is given according to the approved and accumulated hours when the student has returned a diary of their duties as tutor and a report on their learning experience to the Student Union POKA specialist. If requested, the tutor receives a certificate from the POKA specialist.
When a student is trained as a peer tutor and in their duties, they promotes their professional development and cooperation skills and builds their network of people. They develops their steering skills, strengthens their ability to take responsibility and grows in the role of a representative and strengthens their ability to work in management positions.

Location and time

Exchange tutor training sessions are organized in March–April and August, and another round of training is held in October–December. The exact training dates are announced during the tutor recruitment process. The training sessions are primarily held at Karelia University of Applied Sciences' Tikkarinne or Wärtsilä campuses.

Materials

Learning materials are provided by experts from the Student Union POKA and other trainers and are available in Moodle.

Teaching methods

The course exchange tutoring includes 10–15 hours of contact teaching (tutor training sessions), as well as independent study and reflective assignments in the Moodle learning environment. Participation in the tutor training sessions and contact teaching is mandatory for students who wish to become exchange tutors.
During the tutoring period, the student keeps a diary to record working hours and submits a final report on their learning experiences at the end of the course.
The language of instruction for the course is English.

Employer connections

Not included in the course.

Exam schedules

The course does not include an exam.

International connections

The course has a strong international dimension as it aims to support the integration and interaction with international students during their exchange in Joensuu. Since the language of teaching is English, the course is also accessible to Karelia students whose native language is not Finnish.

Completion alternatives

Participation in the contact teaching included in the exchange tutor training is required. In the case of an unavoidable absence (e.g., due to illness), the student must compensate by completing an independent assignment and studying the training materials independently.

Student workload

The exchange tutor training includes 27 hours of work (with approximately 10–15 hours of contact teaching), after which tutors can manage their time independently while performing tutoring duties. In order to receive one credit for the tutor training, tutors must accumulate a sufficient number of tutoring hours. Credit is not awarded for the training alone unless the student also participates in actual tutoring activities.

Further information

The exchange course is organized by the Student Union POKA at Karelia University of Applied Sciences.
