You become acquainted with the international development and possibilities of management. You learn to communicate and cooperate in an international operational environment. You can establish communication channels with different international groups and respond to different expectations on the part of international partners and clients. You can utilize this knowledge when developing social and health care organizations in Finland.

-a one-week study trip abroad or taking part in an international conference, the duration of which is at least two days; the lecturers of the course try to arrange a study trip – you can participate in it or try find a suitable conference yourself
-a seminar day at Karelia UAS where you will hold a presentation about your own study trip or conference, listen to other presentations and take actively part in conversation

- Analyze the content of the lectures particularly in relation to leadership and development within your own (current or previous) organization or workplace.

Content

Expert lectures on various management topics are organized in cooperation with Riveria and Karelia (take place 2 times per semester).

Location and time

Dates for the lectures in 2024-2025 are: 4.10.2024, 13.12.2024, 14.2.2025 and 9.5.2025.
The time for lectures will be announced in advance for the spring and autumn semester on the Riveria Continuing Education website. In addition, your own group Moodle you will receive information about upcoming lectures.
The lectures are online in Microsoft Teams.

Teaching methods

From the second year onwards, you can complete your elective studies (Leadership Perspectives 5 cr) by participating in the training days of the Perspectives on Leadership series (4 in total) and by completing a written assignment related to the lecture series.

The Perspectives on Management lecture series is a lecture series on leadership organized by Karelia University of Applied Sciences and Riveria, which is suitable for everyone interested in the development of working life, such as managers, supervisors, those working in planning and development tasks and HR personnel. Lectures are held four times a year - two in the spring and two in the fall. You can find current lecture series by Riveria’s continuing education with the keyword “perspectives on leadership”.

The main goal is to deepen the different perspectives of leadership on the subject areas of expert lectures.

Student workload

The course is 5 ECTS (= 135 hours), of which 16 hours are for expert lectures and 119 hours are for an independent written assignment.

Objective

After completing this course you will be able to:
- Utilize the development methods used in social and health care management for the renewal of functions and structures
- Evaluate and utilize research data in the health sector
- Identify your own leadership skills and are able to strengthen them

Content

You can carry out practical training in different social and health care environments, either in Finland or abroad. Practical training can also be conducted within various social and health care projects. If you participate in an international conference and visit social and health care organizations abroad (approximately 5 days), you will earn 2,5 ECTS for the internship. If you are on exchange abroad for a longer period and you are familiarizing yourself with the management and development practices of a healthcare organization, it will be agreed upon in advance with the internship supervisor whether the exchange will replace the entire internship period. The total scope of the internship is 5 ECTS (135 hours), of which approximately 55 hours are reserved for creating the plan and final report, and 80 hours are allocated for the actual internship. The internship does not have to be continuous; you can plan the timing to achieve the goals you have set for the internship.

Objective
