Location and time

The Hygiene Passport exam will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM.
The retake exam will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Wärtsilä campus, Karjalankatu 3, hours to be announced later.

The maximum duration of the exam is 45 minutes, and you can leave the exam no earlier than 20 minutes after the start of the exam.

Teaching methods

The student studies the test materials independently using the materials indicated in the section.
The Hygiene Passport test tests are held on the Wärtsilä campus of Karelia University of Applied Sciences.

Hygiene expertise in the food sector is stipulated in the food legislation. A person working in the food industry must master the basics of the food industry and know how to handle food safely. The purpose of the hygiene passport is to promote food safety in the sector.

If the employee works in a food premises (e.g. cafe, restaurant, fast food restaurant, commercial kitchen, food store, bakery or food manufacturing factory) and handles unpackaged perishable food (e.g. milk, meat, fish), he needs a hygiene pass.

Exam schedules

The Hygiene Passport exam will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM.
The retake exam will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Wärtsilä campus, Karjalankatu 3, hours to be announced later.

The maximum duration of the exam is 45 minutes, and you can leave the exam no earlier than 20 minutes after the start of the exam.

Student workload

2 credits correspond to 54 hours of student work.
You must read carefully for the Hygiene Passport test. You can also practice before the test using the model test on the Finnish Food Authority website, which also includes answers to the statements in question.

Further information

Please bring your ID card (preferably with a Finnish personal identification number) and a ballpoint pen (blue) to the test.

Please note! From 10 June 2024, the Hygiene Passport will be issued with your full name and Finnish personal identification number. If the person does not yet have a Finnish personal identification number, they will be issued a Hygiene Passport with their full name and date of birth.

The following documents are accepted as personal documents:
- Finnish residence permit, passport, driving or moped license and Kela card with photo
- foreign ID card and passport
- foreign passport (accepted only if the foreign passport does not contain any indication that the document holder's dishonesty could not be reliably proven)
- refugee travel document (accepted only if the refugee's travel document does not contain any indication that the identity of the document could not be reliably established)
- a document issued by an authority (police/border guard) that contains a copy of the passport, an official stamp and a certificate that the passport is in the possession of the authority for the time being. This document can be used temporarily to prove identity.
- residence permit card or residence card issued by the Finnish Immigration Service for refugees, asylum seekers or other immigrants

You have a maximum of 45 minutes to complete the test. You may leave the test no earlier than 20 minutes after the test has started.

The test is completely independent. During the test, you are not allowed to use aids, look at other people's answers, or talk to others. Failure to follow the instructions will result in the test being rejected and the person being removed from the test room.

Taking photos in the test room is prohibited.

After the test, you will receive a payment link through which you can pay the passport fee.

The test is evaluated according to the instructions of the Finnish Food Authority.

The test is passed when the test taker gets at least 34 out of 40 points correctly.

After passing the test, you will receive a hygiene passport certificate and a card.
