Objective

The objective of course for the international tutoring is to strengthen the student's team guidance and performance skills and to provide the capacity to operate in a multicultural environment. The aim is also to strengthen your professional competence through your core competence and to create networks. The student can also develop their own language skills and their organizational capacity during the course.

Content

The course of international tutoring includes one credit (1 ECTS) of tutoring trainings. The training will cover practical matters related to tutoring and practice group guidance skills. The credits 2-5 come according to the tutoring hours accumulated from the tutoring duties during the academic year.

A record of the course is given according to the approved and accumulated hours when the student has returned a diary of their duties as tutor and a report on their learning experience to the Student Union POKA specialist. If requested, the tutor receives a certificate from the POKA specialist.

When a student is trained as a peer tutor and in their duties, they promotes their professional development and cooperation skills and builds their network of people. They develops their steering skills, strengthens their ability to take responsibility and grows in the role of a representative and strengthens their ability to work in management positions.

Location and time

The tutoring period begins in April and ends in late May of the following year. Tutoring is conducted either in person on campus/in Joensuu and remotely.

Materials

Tutors are expected to familiarize themselves with the training, the Tutor Moodle, and other distributed materials.

Teaching methods

A degree tutor supports new students in their studies, social integration and in settling into Joensuu, as well as introduces them to Karelia University of Applied Sciences and POKA. The tutor signs a tutor agreement, participates in tutor training, and prepares both a tutoring action plan and a final report. Tutors collaborate with other tutors, POKA specialists, International Division, and study counselors.

The three-part tutor training includes an introduction to tutoring tasks and key themes, as well as opportunities to connect with other tutors and learn about available services. During the training, tutors actively plan and develop their activities. The training provides one credit, while the remaining credits (up to a total of five) are earned through the planning and active implementation of tutoring, documented by the tutor.

Employer connections

Tutoring does not include an internship nor automatically involve workplace collaboration. However, tutors can utilize and expand their professional networks while organizing activities.

Exam schedules

Tutoring does not include exams.

International connections

Tutoring offers an opportunity to enhance intercultural competence while working in multicultural groups. Multicultural awareness is also a key theme in tutor training sessions.

Completion alternatives

If a tutor is absent from the tutor training, they must compensate for the absence with alternative assignments.

Student workload

Tutors are responsible for managing their own time. Responsibilities are shared equally among tutors within the same field. If a tutor is unable to fulfill their role during a certain period, they must inform a POKA specialist or a study counselor.

Further information

he development of Degree Tutoring is part of the Cultural Diversity of Study Paths project (in 2024-2026). The aim of the project is to strengthen the study paths of underrepresented student groups. In Karelia UAS, we want to strengthen the multicultural competence of of staff and Student Union POKA, grouping and study skills of student groups, and to increase peer support and communality.
