Content

This course introduces the processes of visual communication from the perspectives of both the recipient and the author of the message. To build a visual message, it is central to understand the interaction between works and the recipient, as well as master the creative process between the author and the work. To understand how a visual message is created and how it affects us, we explore visual expression through photography and graphic design as authors and recipients. The course explores the historical and cultural perspective of the world of visual messages. New ways of visual expression will be explored by looking in more depth to some of the special techniques of digital imaging. Key themes include visual literacy and semiotic image interpretation (representation), the process of conveying a visual message from author to recipient (human perception and information processing), means of photo expression (photojournalism, conceptual photography), the relation of text and image in a visual message (advertising, poster graphics), special techniques (stereo image, panorama, HDR, timelapse, sequence).
