Objective
After completing the course, the student can • read aloud Chinese texts with the help of pinyin, • introduce themselves briefly in Chinese, • recognize some basic Chinese characters, • type Chinese characters on a computer and phone.
Content
1. Pronunciation practice. Systematical study of phonetics, including initials, finals and tones 2. Speaking and listening (daily greetings, name, family, language, nationality and study) 3. Basic knowledge of Chinese characters (the composition of a character, writing rules, strokes and radicals) 4. Basic cultural knowledge

The course starts at beginner level, Common European Framework of Reference skill level A1.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
FAIL The student does not have a command of the vocabulary, phraseology and structures studied in the course. Lack of vocabulary knowledge causes repetition and inaccuracy in delivery and delivery is not in accordance with the target language but instead consists of disconnected sentences or the context between the sentences is not conveyed. Grammatical errors that prevent the message from being conveyed. The student is not familiar with the differences between the target language culture and home culture presented in the course and is not able to adapt communication to the target language culture. 1 The student has a sufficient command of the vocabulary, phraseology and structures studied in the study unit, but the lack of knowledge in vocabulary causes repetition and inaccuracy in delivery and delivery is not always in accordance with the target language. The student knows a few differences between the target language culture and home culture presented in the study unit and is able to in some situations adapt communication to the target language culture. 2 The student has a satisfactory command of the vocabulary, phraseology and structures studied in the study unit and is able to use them quite appropriately both orally and in writing. 3 The student has a good command of the vocabulary, phraseology and structures studied in the study unit and can almost always use them appropriately both orally and in writing. Grammatical errors, but the errors do not prevent the message from being conveyed. The student knows almost all the differences between the target language culture and home culture presented in the study unit and can partially adapt communication to the target language culture. 4 The student has a very good command of the vocabulary, phraseology and structures studied in the study unit and can use them appropriately both orally and in writing. Some grammatical errors, but the errors do not prevent the message from being conveyed. The student is familiar with the differences between the target language culture and home culture presented in the study unit and can almost always adapt communication to the target language culture.

5 The student has an excellent command of the vocabulary, phraseology and structures studied in the course and is able to use them appropriately and in versatile ways, both orally and in writing. Structures are nearly error-free, and errors do not prevent the message from being understood. The student is familiar with the differences between the target language culture and home culture presented in the course and is able to adapt communication to the target language culture.
Materials
New Practical Chinese Reader 1, Textbook, 3rd Edition (Introduction to Phonetics page 1-38). In addition, the teacher distributes material on characters for independent study, other materials and online materials.

The course is intended for students of all disciplines. Accreditations or exemptions are not available for the course or parts of the course.

Contact teaching on Zoom or other web meeting.
Accomplishment methods
Study methods: Participation in teaching, course assignments (such as spoken language and character exercises) and the exam. The study methods on the course include classroom teaching, pair and group exercises and guided independent study. There is a maximum of 48 hours of contact teaching and an additional 60 hours of independent study. The course is fast-paced and learning its contents requires participating in contact teaching as well as methodical independent study. Evaluation criteria: The minimum attendance requirement for contact teaching is 50%. The successful completion of the course and participating in the exam require active participation and the completion of course assignments within the specified schedule. The exam is graded numerically 0–5, with the lowest passable score of 65% of the maximum score. The retake exam takes place approximately a month after the final exam. After the retake exam, students can participate in an exam the next time the course is offered. Students must register for the retake exam by sending the teacher an email at least ten days before the exam. Students of the UEF Open University can only participate in the first exam.
