Objective

After completing the course, the student can communicate in German, for example in various situations related to Finnish and German culture, education, history, nature and the media. The student can also converse on a healthy lifestyle and discuss the weather. They can use the relevant German structures in the above situations. Students also learn about customs and everyday life in German-speaking countries Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level A2.2-B1.1. From 1.1.2024 onward: After completing the course, the student can use skills needed in the workplace, such as expressing their opinion, writing an email, and explaining themselves in a fictional job interview. Students will also learn more travel vocabulary, how to work in a car rental agency, how to fill in forms, how to discuss healthy lifestyles and recycling. They can use the relevant German structures in the above situations. Students also learn about customs and everyday life in German-speaking countries. Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level A2.2-B1.1.

Methods of completion

Participating in instruction, completing the course assignments and passing the online exams (2). The course includes lectures, pair and group exercises, and guided independent study. It includes 48 hours of classroom instruction and around 60 hours of independent study. The maximum number of contact teaching hours is 48. The course progresses rapidly and learning requires the attendance of classroom sessions and regular, independent study. Course-specific, practical arrangements are agreed during the first session. Evaluation criteria The minimum attendance requirement for contact teaching is 50%. Participating in instruction and completing course assignments and exercises. There are two exams (2) in the course and the grade (0-5) consist of the points of the two exams, with a lowest passable score of 65% of the maximum score. There are optional vocabulary tests which may affect positive the grade. The resit of the exam is approximately in a month from the exam. After this, the next possibility to attend a resit will be when the course is organized next time. To enrol in the resit, send an email to teacher of the course no later than ten days before the resit. UEF Open University students may take part in only the first resit of the course.

Content

During the course, students practice the vocabulary, phrases and structures needed in the communicative situations listed in the learning outcomes. They practice communicative situations both orally and in writing.

Materials

A book is used for the course: Kauppi Eva & Odell Anja: Hallo! 3 Saksaa aikuisille. 2018 edition or newer. Chapters 1-9. The study materials for the course may include handouts or online material. From 1.1.2024 onward: Materials available in the eLearn Moodle environment of the course.

Qualifications

Continuation to the courses German 1-3. Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level A2.1.-A2.2.
