The course is implemented as a NONSTOP course, in which students progress according to their own timetable, following the instructions on the Moodle.

Objective

Students * deepen their understanding of the special characteristics and the process of the nursing care of a patient who is acutely or critically ill, injured or requires elective perioperative care * apply anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, as well as key patient care examinations, nursing interventions and infection control techniques in the context of perioperative, emergency and intensive care work *apply key patient care investigations and nursing interventions * plan, implement and evaluate in a sustainable, responsible and ethical manner and in multiprofessional cooperation, the individualised care of a patient who is acutely or critically ill, injured or requires elective perioperative care * support and professionally encounter the perioperative, emergency and intensive care patient, their family and next of kin

Content

Multiprofessional clinical care process of the perioperative, emergency and intensive care patient; responsible assessment of a patient's care needs and priority of clinical care (triage); pathophysiology of basic organ dysfunctions; identification of basic organ dysfunctions and initiation of immediate treatment; care of the anaesthetised patient; pharmacotherapy, intravenous fluid therapy and (blood) transfusion therapy; basics of anaesthesiology

Duration of the course: NU230030A-3002 Nursing and development in the care of perioperative and critically ill patients: 13.01.2025 - 30.06.2025 Independent studying on the Moodle is time and place independent studying. Students may choose to participate at one or more checkpoint meetings online. At the checkpoint meeting, the student has the opportunity to receive guidance on how to complete the course. Meetings are voluntary. The checkpoint meetings are held at the following times: 10.2.2025 at 9-10 a.m. 25.3.2025 at 9-10 a.m. 23.5.2025 at 9-10 a.m. Place: Teams, links to the meetings on the Moodle Meetings must be pre-registered. More detailed instructions on the Moodle.

Material information on the Moodle. The course material also includes learning material in Finnish, such as nursing guidelines and Current Care Guidelines.

Teaching methods

The course is delivered as Nonstop online studies. Using the Moodle learning platform, students study independently according to their own schedule with the help of various instructions, materials, assignments and tests. During the course, the student will have the opportunity to participate to online checkpoint meetings, during which the student will receive guidance from teachers.

Exam schedules

Registration for the course closes on 31.05.2025 Course submissions (exams, tests, assignments) cannot be returned after 30.6. 2025.The course grade will be based on the evaluated performance required so far in the course. The evaluation of the coursework will be carried out by teachers: Weeks 4, 9, 13, 17, 21 ja 24. Students will progress through the Moodle learning platform via approved midterm tests towards the exam, which will open to students after successful completion of the tests. Students may choose to take only the exam, in which case they will be limited to an overall approved course grade of 1-3. If a student wishes to receive a higher grade for the course than the exam grade, they may also take a video-taped lesson, which may raise the exam grade by up to two grades. Course exam on the Moodle: numerical assessment 0-3 Students may take the exam three times. This allows they to resit the failing grade. The student can make up a failed exam twice. An accepted performance cannot be upgraded. The student must receive an approved performance (grade 1-3) on the exam before they can submit the videotaped lesson if they wishes. Video-taped lesson: possibility of grades 4-5. This assignment may increase the grade of the passed exam by 2 grades. NOTE: If you take the course exam after 12.6.2025, you will not have the opportunity to do the video-taped lesson. Your exam will only be assessed after the end of the course.

Qualifications

Students have a relatively good command of the content of the basic and intermediate professional courses. Students must have completed 120 credits in the nursing degree programme.
