Objective
After completing the course, the student recognizes the advantages and limitations of wood material as a building material, the products and qualities used in wood construction. In addition, you are familiar with the basic structures of wood construction and building physical behavior. You are also familiar with wood construction systems and their advantages and limitations. The student also becomes acquainted with special issues in wood construction, such as fire and sound technology.
The course prepares you for advanced studies in wood structural engineering.
Content
The course includes:
- Wood raw material resources and their use
- Advantages and strengths of wood material
- Wood-based products and their use in construction
- Wooden structures and their building physical behavior
- Cost-effective use of wood construction systems.
- Familiarity with special issues in wood construction.
- Exercise and seminar presentation related to the content of the course.

According to the work schedule in the fall semester 2023.

The material shared on the Moodle platform of the study course.
Recommended literature: Unto Siikanen, Puurakentaminen.
Teaching methods
The study course is implemented in teaching periods so that the teaching situation always consists of an introductory lecture on the topic to be discussed, a short assignment given during the introductory lecture, and a joint summary of the assignment at the end of the lecture period. In addition to the lectures, the course includes an exercise task to be done in small groups, on the basis of which the seminar presentations are held.
In addition to the lectures, a familiarization visit will be made to a wood construction site in the city's area.

The exam related to the study course is held on a mutually agreed date during the completion of the study course

Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation of the course is based on a written exam, which is performed at the end of the course. Passing the course requires, however, that all assignments given during the course have been returned with approval.
