Objective
You are able to communicate in various everyday situations and also in elementary business situations in Finnish. You can tell about your work and working environment and make arrangements for meetings. You are able to understand and write elementary business related messages and texts.
Content
- Oral practice for elementary business situations, such as telephoning in Finland, attending trade fair, hosting business visits, telling about work and giving company presentations
- Writing short business-related messages in Finnish
- Some features of spoken language
Teaching methods
Targets:
You are able to communicate in various everyday situations and also in elementary working situations in Finnish. You can tell about your work and working environment and make arrangements for meetings. You are able to understand and write simple work-related messages and texts. You are able to communicate at the basic level on work related meetings.
The course includes contact teaching and independent study. The presence at the lectures is essential in order to acquire the speaking skills.
The study unit includes:
- Work related vocabulary
- Expanding everyday vocabulary (e.g. illnesses, feelings and emotions)
- Ordinal numbers and expressions of time
- Writing an e-mail
- Expanding knowledge of the grammatical structures of Finnish: past tense, object, 3. infinitive, different sentence types (e.g. verb + verb sentences), passive form.
The materials are provided by the teacher in the Moodle environment.
Student workload
52 hours of contact teaching + 83 hours of independent work.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
The evaluation is mainly based on the final exam, where speaking, writing, listening and reading skills are tested. Active participation during the lessons, the vocabulary tests and the homework are also stressed.
