Objective

After completing the course, you will know the physical and chemical properties of hydrogen and understand how they affect its production, storage, transport and use. You will understand the structure and value chain of the hydrogen economy, including key players, technologies and market dynamics. You will be able to describe and compare different hydrogen production methods (e.g. electrolysis, reforming, pyrolysis) and assess their technical and environmental impacts. You will understand the possibilities for further processing of hydrogen, such as synthetic fuels and chemicals, and their role in different sectors. You will be able to analyse the role of hydrogen as part of the energy system, especially in renewable energy storage and the energy transition. You will know the basic principles of hydrogen safety and be able to identify the risks and safety requirements related to hydrogen handling. You can apply what you have learned critically and assess the potential of hydrogen as part of sustainable energy solutions.

Content

The course introduces the key properties of hydrogen and its importance as part of a sustainable energy system. Students will learn about the structure and value chain of the hydrogen economy, including hydrogen production technologies, storage, distribution and further processing for various uses. The course also examines the role of hydrogen in sector integrations in energy supply (power-to-x, industry, transport) and the basic principles of hydrogen safety. The course provides a technical and systems-level perspective on the hydrogen economy and provides the skills to assess the potential of hydrogen as part of a carbon-neutral future.
