Objective
The student will become familiar with the structure and functions of the university of applied sciences and the student union. They will understand the societal and legal significance of the student union, be able to act in a position of trust, build professional networks, and understand the basics of meeting procedures.
Content
The course consists of active participation in the student union’s operations, such as serving on the student union board, representative council, or as the chair of the council. Through practical involvement, the student gains experience in decision-making, advocacy, and influencing within the higher education community. The course is implemented in cooperation with the Student Union POKA of Karelia University of Applied Sciences.
Location and time
The course is implemented remotely and independently over the academic year. Specific schedules and instructions are available on Moodle.

Teaching methods
The course is based on practical involvement in student union positions of trust. The student will serve either as a member of the POKA Board, a representative council member, or the chair of the representative council. Learning occurs through active participation in meetings, workshops, and events, as well as through independent tasks and reflective assignments. Guidance is provided by the Executive Director of POKA and/or a designated contact person at Karelia.
Employer connections
The course provides hands-on experience in organizational work, decision-making, and advocacy. It enhances workplace skills, especially in communication, teamwork, and administration.
Exam schedules
There is no separate exam. Assessment is based on active participation and possible written assignments.
International connections
The student will gain insight into national and international student advocacy, for example by following POKA’s and SAMOK’s international cooperation activities.
Completion alternatives
The course is completed by serving in a student union position of trust.
Student workload
The course is worth approximately 2–5 ECTS credits depending on the extent of participation. The total workload includes participation in meetings, events, and preparatory work (approximately 54–135 hours).
