Objective

The aim of the course is to help you understand the Finnish society and to improve your chances of becoming a member of it as quickly as possible. As an ex-pat student, you will have a better chance of integration when you gain a good understanding of how the new society works.

Content

Topics discussed during the course explain how the Finnish society works and tell the story of Finland:
- Functioning and structure of Finnish society
- Values, laws and democratic principles
- Rights and obligations in terms of an individual
- Everyday practices

Location and time

Wärtsilä CampusSept - Nov classes 2 x 2h / week

Materials

Material provided by the teacher (Moodle) and visiting lecturers.

Teaching methods

Contact classes at the campus and visits outside the university 30 h (80 % minimum attendance limit).
Tasks/ reports, preparing for the test 50 hours.

Completion alternatives

The course is designed for students who have come to Finland only recently.

If you have settled down in Finland for a long time ago, please, get in touch with the teacher in charge of the course to discuss proof of competence for credit transfer.

Assessment methods and criteria

Active attendance in contact classes and visits (80 % minimum attendance limit),
written tasks and reports,
multiple choice test on reading material.
