Objective
You are familiar with the key concepts of life cycle management and life cycle analyses. You know about different types of renewable energy systems and how they are applied at the community level. You know the standards guiding the life cycle analyses. You know how to carry out life-cycle inventory data collection, life cycle impact assessment, and interpret the results. You can analyse the life-cycle environmental impacts of community-based energy systems and communicate the results to stakeholders at an appropriate level.
Content
Key contents of this course include:
- Background knowledge on life cycle management and analyses
- Knowledge of standards and professional routines used in conducting life cycle analyses
- Creating a life-cycle model of a community renewable energy system
- Analysing and communicating the environmental impacts of community energy transition
Location and time
On site at Wärtsilä Campus, Karelia UAS.
Materials
ISO 14040/14044 standards, lecture materials and LCA literature provided at course Moodle.
Teaching methods
The course gives an understanding of LCA on bachelor level, with emphasis on the use of the methodology for assessing energy systems. The first part of the course consists of the theoretical methodology based on the ISO standards and LCA literature. In addition, the use of the SimaPro software is practiced with in a wind power case analyses. In the second part, students will conduct . independent LCA case studies on renewable energy systems.
Exam schedules
Exam at mid-point of the course before LCA case studies.
Evaluation scale
H-5
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessments are based on the exam (40%), LCA case study and presentation (60%). Assessment criteria will be provided at course Moodle.
