Objective

In critically ill patient nursing studies, you will gain knowledge and skills that will help you to identify a medical condition threatening a patient's vital functions, and work effectively as a nurse with a critically ill patient.

After compleating this course:

- You understand the principles of nursing care for a critically ill patient based on legislation, values and ethical principles.
- You understand pathophysiological processes related to critical illness.
- You understand the treatment path of a critically ill patient.
- You recognize serious disorders of vital functions.
- You understand the importance of a multiprofessional team in critical care practice.
- You know the some of the basic equipment used in critical care nursing.

Content

Critically ill patients can be encountered in many different healthcare settings. Understanding the basics of critically ill patients care helps nurses to work safely. The course is suitable for those interested in acute care, and especially for nurses/nursing students who want to learn about acute care in-hospital, such ascare in intensive and/or dependent care units.

The topics in the course include:

- Basics of nursing care for critically ill patients
- Basic critical care nursing in intensive care units and surveillance wards.
- Nursing practice of a patient with respiratory failure
- Nursing practice of a patient with circulatory failure
- Nursing practice of a patient with consciousness disorders.

Materials

Moodle's material, includes the online lectures of an emergency physician on the Claned platform. Additional material suggestions in Moodle.

Teaching methods

The online course includes Moodle content, online lectures and midterm tests. A study course to be completed independently.
