Objective
You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You can ask and answer to basic questions. You are able to tell about yourself and use polite phrases and greetings in everyday situations, e.g. meeting friends and asking about the price and ordering.
Content
The study unit includes:
- Finnish alphabet, consonants, vowels and diphthongs
- Basic vocabulary
- Sharing personal information: e.g. name, nationality, language skills, family, hobbies, studies
- Numbers and expressions of time
- Basic grammar: e.g. conjugation of basic verbs, partitive case, polar questions and common interrogatives
Location and time
There are no lessons on the course. You study independently online in Moodle-environment. You will get feedback from you work, partly during the course, partly afterwards. Complete all of the exercises by 5.12.2024.
Teaching methods
The course is online. You study the basics of Finnish language: you will study the basics of the grammar and the basic vocabulary, you do the exercises and listening, speaking and writing tasks online. The course if based on the self study, but you will get correct answers / feedback from your exercises.

2 credits ie. 54 hours
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The course is accepted when you have completed and returned all the assignments in Moodle and completed the final exams. The course is failed if the assignments are not completed, do not meet the criteria set out in the guidelines or are returned later than 5th of December 2024.
