Objective

Understand the role of forest energy and resources in Finnish energy production. Know the production process and potential use of forest fuel. Know the quality requirements of wood chips by location and size. Know the supply and production chain of forest biomass-based energy production, taking into account the sustainability criteria. Calculate energy content and density of wood chips in a laboratory setting according to the standards. Command calculations for wood fuel and plan the supply of wood fuel from the forest to the plant. Calculate the cost of machines use in forest biomass harvest.

Content

The main contents of the course include:
- Harvest potential of forest biomass by area
- Moisture content analysis and energy content of wood chips
- Properties and quality requirements of forest fuel
- Sustainable harvesting
- Small scale wood fuel supply chain technology and cost
- Crown biomass harvesting and economy
- Calculations of biomass energy
- Cost calculations for machinery
