Objective

You can pronounce Finnish in an understandable manner. You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You are able to use the basic vocabulary and grammar to express your own ideas in elementary everyday situations. You can ask and answer to basic questions. You are able to tell about yourself and use polite phrases and greetings in everyday situations, e.g. meeting friends, asking about the price and ordering.

Content

- Finnish alphabet, consonants, vowels and diphthongs
- Pronunciation
- Sharing personal information: e.g. name, nationality, language skills, family, hobbies, studies
- Numbers and expressions of time
- Basic grammar: e.g. the word order, the verbtypes and the conjugation of verbs, partitive case, polar questions and common interrogatives

The course starts 21.10.2024 and ends 28.2.2025.

Materials

The materials are provided by the teacher in the Moodle environment.

Teaching methods

The course includes contact teaching and independent study. The presence at the lectures is essential in order to acquire the speaking skills.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is mainly based on the final exam, where speaking, writing, listening and reading skills are tested. Active participation during the lessons, the vocabulary tests and the homework are also stressed.
