Objective

Student knows the climate and energy planning initiatives in regional and European levels. Can analyse the plans and identify and assess good practices. Can describe climate and energy activities and analyse their carbon emission reductions.

Content

Climate conservation and energy solutions. Planning processes in local, regional and international contexts. Environmental and energy policy instruments (e.g. Emission trading schemes, Carbon credit, REDD+ protected areas). Carbon footprint calculations. Evaluation of external costs to environment. Sustainable Energy Action Planning (SEAP) based on common European standard (Covenant of Mayors process and its guidelines). Implementation activities of Regional Climate and Energy Programme, SEAPs, or other municipal-level climate and energy plans. Role of technical achievements in sustainable development (cases).

Location and time

Wärtsila Campus (Karjalankatu 3); all lectures will be carried out in February-April 2024; completion of assignments will continue until mid-May.

Teaching methods

The course introduced you to Climate policies, strategies, and carbon footprint calculations. The course analyses European cities' Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans. The studies follow the process of the Covenant of Mayors and its guidelines. These strategy analyses are followed by the Climate change adaptation strategies, where Climate Adapt Service is utilised for case examples. The course introduces you also to the GHG Protocol and its Corporate Standards for the calculation of the carbon footprint of an organisation. The course is implemented through assignments and compiling a learning diary that you may direct to the most interesting subtopics.
