Objective

Main learning outcomes
• The student masters the carbon cycle in forestry and forest products
• The student understands the European emission trading system
• The student is capable to do carbon accounting
• The student is able to evaluate international agreements and legislation influencing forest management
• The student can evaluate the effect of forest management on the carbon sink and pool function

Content

This study unit is about carbon in forests and what forestry measures you can take to further improve the carbon balance. The course starts with the forest carbon cycle, which includes the storage of carbon in forest products. The course continues with carbon accounting and analysing how management strategies affect the carbon sink and pool function of forests. Finally, the impact of international agreements and legislation is looked in upon.
