Objective

The aim of the course is to help you understand the Finnish society, and to improve your chances of becoming member of it as quickly as possible. Ex-pat students have a better chance of integration and employment when they gain a good understanding of how the new society works.

Content

Topics discussed during the course explain how the Finnish society works and tell the story of Finland:

-Finnish history
-Development and structure of Finnish society
-Values, laws and democratic principles
-Rights and obligations in terms of an individual
-Finnish way of life and everyday practices
-Rules of working life and Finnish work culture
-Career advice for recruitment and employment opportunities

Completion alternatives

The course is designed for students who have come to Finland only recently. If you have prior learning that meets the learning outcomes of this course,
e.g. you have taken a similar course at another Finnish university,
lived in Finland for several years and, maybe, participated in integration training,
please, get in touch with the teacher in charge of the course to discuss RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING.

Student workload

Scheduled sessions (workshops/ presentations by specialists of working life/visits, test) 40 hours;
Independent studying (tasks/reports, studying ABC of Working Life material for the test) 64 hours

Please, note that your attendance in contact classes is compulsory.
You are expected to carry out compensating tasks for missed contact classes.

Further information

The course is designed for students coming from outside Finland with no previous work experience in the country.
To be allowed to join the course, you need to apply for exemption from  Svenska för arbetslivet  4 cr (Swedish language) course.

Assessment methods and criteria

To pass the course you are to
-Attend contact classes, presentations and possible visits.
-Carry out all written and other tasks.
-Pass the test on reading material.
