Objective

This course will give you an overview over the usage of industrial automation at manufacturing industry. Industrial automation solutions have been affecting manufacturing industry for several decades and it is still continuously growing trend among industrial manufacturing plants. The course will give an engineering student an overview and understanding on how industrial automation can be applied at manufacturing plants. Economical and technological advantages and disadvantages of industrial automation solutions will be presented and evaluated by the students through real life examples.

Content

The course will go through basic concepts of automation technology, components of automation systems, basic mechanical solutions, actuators of motion, control systems and sensory devices. Examples of robotic and automated solutions will be given and discussed.

The course will also focus on the use and implementation of industrial automation solutions from perspectives of: part and assembly design (design for manufacturability), labor aspects, productivity gains, quality improvements, use of process data, metrology assisted production and future trends of automation. Laboratory demonstrations will be given during the course and real life industrial solutions will be presented.
