Objective

You pronounce, read and write Finnish in an understandable manner. You apply basic vocabulary and grammar to express your own ideas in elementary everyday situations (oral and written). You can introduce yourself in Finnish, tell about your life and use polite phrases and greetings in everyday situations, such as meeting friends and situations at cafes, restaurants and department stores. You can ask and answer basic questions.

Content

- Finnish alphabet and pronunciation
- Sharing personal information: names, nationality, occupation, language skills, family, hobbies
- Talking about the weather conditions, seasons and time
- Situations at cafes, restaurants and department stores

Materials

The materials are provided by the teacher in the Moodle environment.

Teaching methods

The student pronounces, reads and writes Finnish in an understandable manner. S/he applies basic vocabulary and grammar to express her/his own ideas in elementary everyday situations (oral and written). S/he can introduce her/himself in Finnish, tell about her/his life and use polite phrases and greetings in everyday situations, such as meeting friends and situations at cafes, restaurants and department stores. S/he can ask and answer basic questions.

The course includes contact teaching and independent study. The presence at the lectures is essential in order to acquire the speaking skills.

Completion alternatives

AHOT-exam possible, if previous knowledge of Finnish language. Please, contact the teacher.

Student workload

52 hours of contact teaching + 83 hours of independent work.

H-5

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is mainly based on the final exam, where speaking, writing, listening and reading skills are tested. Active participation during the lessons, the vocabulary tests and the homework are also stressed.
