Objective

The student will be able to • identify the basic materials and methods applied in remote sensing • understand how remote sensing is utilized in forest inventory • understand the main advantages and restrictions of remote sensing • interpret and analyze digital remotely sensed materials • construct and interpret statistical models for the prediction of forest attributes
Content
Physical fundamentals and basic concepts of remote sensing. Visual and numerical interpretation of digital aerial images, optical satellite images and airborne laser scanning. General principles of radar remote sensing. The use of remote sensing in forest inventory applications. The course develops the following generic skills: digitalization, critical thinking.

Recommended: Forest mensuration, Basics in Statistics, Basic course in R.

Lecture and exercise notes.
Further information
The course is intended to be taken in 3rd year of the Finnish BSc forestry degree or as a part of forest sciences minor subject studies. The language of instruction is Finnish.
Execution methods
Multi-modal teaching.
Accomplishment methods
Video lectures (10 h), two meetings for asking questions (4 h), computer labs (10 h, from 1 August 2023 12 h) and exercises with video-assisted self evaluation. Moodle exam or electronic exam. Grading 0-5. Exam is 60%, labs and exercises 40% of the grade.
