Objective

This study unit is taught in Finnish. The translation has not been updated after 31 July 2025. Please change the language to Finnish in Peppi and read the description in Finnish. Upon the completion of the course, the students are expected to understand the fundamentals of forest economics, to be able to apply investment calculations, and to understand the rationale for economic calculations supporting forest management decisions. The students are also expected to understand the basic characteristics of the business environment of enterprises on forest sector. The students also learn to know the concepts of multiple-use forestry and ecosystem services among the use of forests.

Content

Fundamentals and basic concepts of neoclassical economics. Capital budgeting in forestry. Economics of timber production. Including multiple-use of forest into economical analysis. Profitability analysis of forestry. Defining economic value of forest holdings. Business environment of forest sector firms. Economic value of ecosystem services.

1.8.2024 alkaen opintojaksolle ei ole osallistujamäärärajoitetta. Osallistujarajoite opintojaksolle on 60 opiskelijaa 31.7.2024 asti. Opetetaan vuosittain kevätlukukaudella. Opintojakso on pakollinen metsätieteen tutkinto-opiskelijoille (kandi) sekä metsätieteen perusopintojen sivuainekokonaisuutta suorittaville (sivuaineopiskelija, alumniopiskelijat). Opintojakso on myös avoimen yliopiston tarjonnassa. Opintojakson voivat suorittaa Karelia-ammattikorkeakoulun opiskelijat Itä-Suomen yliopiston ja Karelia-ammattikorkeakoulun Metsätalouden opetusyhteistyösopimuksen puitteissa. Kampus: Joensuu
