The material will be distributed on the Moodle platform.
Teaching methods
Preparatory studies in mathematics focus on improving basic mathematical skills. The aim of the course is to prepare students for the mathematical challenges needed for university studies. In addition, the course aims to prepare students for the mathematical component of the entrance examinations for polytechnics.
The course includes lectures and computational exercises
Student workload
Lectures 33 h, independent study 40 h, independent acquisition of material 10 h, exam 3 h and feedback 3 h.

Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment is based on an exam, for which the grades are determined as follows:
30% of the maximum score => grade 1
42% of the maximum number of points => grade 2
53% of the maximum number of points => grade 3
70% of the maximum score => grade 4
86% of maximum score => grade 5
Assessment criteria, fail (0)
The student does not know/have mastered the key/individual concepts of mathematics and demonstrates basic knowledge of the domain.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Students can act appropriately when solving simple maths problems, although they can be fumbling. The student can act according to instructions and solve basic problems.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
Students will be able to use mathematical concepts consistently and demonstrate mastery of basic knowledge in the field.
Students can select appropriate ways to model simple mathematical problems. Students can solve basic mathematical problems and assess their own competence. Students can apply their knowledge to basic tasks.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Students can use mathematical terms and concepts in a competent way and combine them into entities.
Students will be able to model and solve simple mathematical problems and assess the validity of the solutions. Students will be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to a variety of tasks and situations.

Objective
You will be able to understand different disciplines of engineering and will get familiar with the career of an engineer. You will have general knowledge of engineering. You will also be able solve more advanced mathematical problems required in field of technology. You will become familiar with use of online calculator.
Content
You will get to know the basic tools for engineering design from ideation, problem solving, through the whole design phases until the product commercialization. This will embark you on a journey that will go through different disciplines needed to create a solution. The course will give you an overview of different fields available in the career path of an engineer and hence improve your choice for the degree needed to pursue. This course also expands your knowledge on quadratic equations, system of two linear equations, and right-angled triangles (Pythagoras, trigonometry).

Objective
You will learn English language and terminology used in various engineering fields that are studied at Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland. You will also improve your English skills further (writing, speaking, reading and communication skills).
Content
The course focuses on improving the language skills required for studying engineering at higher education institutions in Finland. The course will include field-specific language focusing also on communication skills and information retrieval. The course will consist of independent study, groupwork and online meetings with the teachers.

Objective
You will learn to recognise your own strengths and development areas in studying and planning your studies. You know what kind of study opportunities there are and how to apply for degree programmes. You will learn what kind of study skills and digital competence are needed in higher education and how to also develop these skills on your own. You can operate in the digital operating environments of education and utilise cloud services for processing and sharing information. You will gain a better understanding of the Finnish society and culture, which reduces the risk of misunderstandings, and helps you to start integrating and leading an active life in Finland.
Content
In this course, you will get to know Finnish society and culture, as well as the higher education system and higher education institutions as a learning environment. You will also learn about various study and assessment techniques and digital tools and practice using them. You will participate in career counselling and plan your future study path.
