Competence Development and Study Content
The Bachelor of Health Care, Registered Nurse, degree consists of mandatory core competence studies (185 ECTS), complementary nursing studies (10 ECTS), complementary social and health care studies (10 ECTS), and complementary competence studies (5 ECTS).
The mandatory core competence studies include 75 ECTS of clinical placement distributed across all semesters, and a 15 ECTS final thesis. The degree also includes studies in Swedish and English, which are partly integrated into professional studies.
During the first academic year, students strengthen their academic study and learning skills and become familiar with the basics of nursing and internal medicine nursing. In the second year, the focus is on mental health, substance abuse and crisis care, gerontological nursing, and perioperative nursing. At the same time, students are introduced to research and development work and begin the thesis process. The third year deepens knowledge in family nursing and the specific characteristics of oncology and palliative care. Additionally, students study topics related to nursing leadership, quality assurance, and patient safety. The final semester is composed of complementary nursing studies based on the student's personal choices.
Complementary competence studies broaden and deepen your professional expertise. You can choose studies offered by Karelia University of Applied Sciences or other higher education institutions. Karelia offers complementary nursing studies in acute care, mental health and substance abuse care, internal medicine and surgical nursing, and palliative care.
Complementary studies may also include sports academy coaching intended for competitive and elite athletes, as well as participation in student union and tutoring activities, up to a maximum of 15 ECTS. If the aforementioned complementary studies do not align with the student's professional goals, alternative options can be discussed with the student's teacher tutor or study counselor.
Some of the studies are implemented in multidisciplinary collaboration with other social and health care fields.
Work-Life Oriented Learning
Half of the Bachelor of Health Care, Registered Nurse, education takes place in clinical placements within real healthcare environments. In these clinical settings, you will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations and to strengthen and develop your clinical skills. The health and well-being service organizations of North Karelia offer diverse opportunities to complete internships that align with your learning objectives.
Karelia University of Applied Sciences works in close cooperation with regional employers, for example, by developing nursing education and student supervision. If you wish, you also have the opportunity to complete your clinical placements elsewhere in Finland or in international settings. The nursing program’s international cooperation is actively focused on Indonesia, Southern Africa, and Europe.
Work-life collaboration is also utilized through expert guest lectures. In your thesis, you will have a great opportunity to learn research and development methods while responding to real development needs that have emerged from working life. You will get to participate in the development of sustainable well-being-promoting products, services, operational models, and technological solutions. At Karelia UAS, you will have access to high-quality social and health care databases and library services.
Karelia's modern simulation facilities create a learning environment that simulate real clinical work settings, allowing you to safely practice clinical skills and patient interaction. Simulation exercises are integrated into each semester of your studies.
Karelia also maintains a learning and service environment that provides real health, well-being, and rehabilitation services to actual clients. Here, you will have the opportunity to complete clinical training periods in a multidisciplinary collaboration. During your studies, you can also apply to Karelia’s Y-Academy, where students learn entrepreneurship in interdisciplinary teams.
Pedagogical Approaches
The learning objectives and core content of each course module are built around the core competences related to the specific subject area. Core competence defines what you are expected to master upon completing the course. The curriculum is designed according to a constructivist approach, where new knowledge builds upon previously acquired learning, reinforcing earlier understanding and ultimately forming the comprehensive competence of a general nurse.
Half of the Bachelor of Health Care, Registered Nurse, education takes place in clinical work-life environments. Clinical placements are carried out either through individual supervision or in group-based student modules. In the module format, student responsibility and peer learning are emphasized. Clinical supervision is provided by trained professionals from the field as well as UAS educators. The clinical practice is directly linked to the theoretical studies and learning objectives.
Theoretical studies are delivered both on campus and online through face-to-face teaching, as well as through independent study that is not bound by time or place. The studies include both individual and group work. Evidence-based, participatory, and activating teaching methods are used to support and enhance student motivation and responsibility for their own learning, while also fostering professional and personal growth and development.
Modern technology is integrated into the teaching, and high-quality online learning environments and software support the acquisition of course content and management of learning processes. The teaching materials and content are based on guidelines, research evidence, and other up-to-date professional literature.
Ongoing simulation exercises and skills labs throughout the studies support the development of clinical competencies and the management of various care situations. Practical skills are strengthened through repetition during clinical placements. Simulation-based education emphasizes collaborative learning, a safe learning environment, and learning from mistakes.
Flexible Study Pathways
You have the opportunity to choose between a blended learning (multimodal) or full-time daytime study format. Blended learning emphasizes independent theoretical studies that are not bound by time or place, which also supports combining studies with employment. In the daytime format, theoretical instruction is primarily delivered on campus.
The curriculum includes both mandatory courses and elective complementary competence studies. These elective studies can be completed at various stages of your studies, partly also during the summer. You can choose complementary competence studies from Karelia University of Applied Sciences or from other university institutions.
At the beginning of your studies, your tutor teacher and study counselor will assist you in preparing a personal study plan. At this stage, your prior learning will also be reviewed in relation to the degree curriculum. You have the possibility to apply for recognition of prior learning, which may influence the duration of your studies.
Internationalization
Karelia University of Applied Sciences offers excellent opportunities for student exchange, during which you can complete both academic studies and clinical placements. The nursing program collaborates closely with educational partner institutions and organizations in countries such as Zambia, Malawi, Indonesia, Canada, and various European nations. International cooperation is also carried out online as part of various courses. Every year, students from around the world come to Karelia, making diversity and internationalization a part of everyday life at the university.
Evaluation
Evaluation is a continuous process throughout your studies. It includes providing feedback and evaluating various learning assignments, exams, clinical skills demonstrations, and internships. Evaluation is based on the learning objectives and aims to provide a realistic picture of your skill level while ensuring the competence required for the nursing degree.
Evaluation methods include self-evaluation, peer evaluation, feedback from working life, and evaluations conducted by teachers. Course modules are graded either on a pass/fail basis or on a numeric scale from 1 to 5. The assessment criteria are based on Karelia’s evaluation guidelines and the learning objectives of each course.
Your learning, professional development, and personal growth are also supported through various reflective practices, allowing you to examine your own competence, readiness, and areas for development. Through evaluation, feedback, and reflection, you are able to monitor your progress and set new personal goals.

Shared competences of UAS Bachelor's degrees 2022
In Finnish universities of applied sciences, the competences of degrees have been defined as programme-specific competences and shared competences. Competences refer to extensive competence modules, which are combinations of individual knowledge, skills and attitudes. Programme-specific competences form the basis of a student's professional expertise. Shared competences are common competence areas for different programmes and degrees, and they create the foundation for operating in a workplace, cooperation and the development of expertise.
