GIS and Forest MappingLaajuus (6 cr)
Code: MM10013
Credits
6 op
Teaching language
- Finnish
Responsible person
- Markus Huhtinen
Objective
You learn to use GIS systems to gather and analyze geospatial information. You also learn to create and edit your own information layers to a system. You learn to create combinations of local and remote layers to produce useful GIS maps for different users. You also learn to create hard copies of these maps for different publishing platforms.
A successful use of GIS systems also requires basic skills of cartography such as understanding of map projection and coordinate systems as well as basic tools of map visualisation.
Content
Basics of mapping: Map projection and coordinate systems.
Raster and vector layers; map objects and attribute data.
Combining local and map server data.
Queries based on attributes and location.
Basics of Map Visualisation. Thematic maps of qualitative and quantity scales.
Digitizing editing of simple map objects. Importing GPS data.
Raster analysis; interpolation of surfaces, DEM, raster queries.
Gis package: ArcGIS (1922)
