Objective
The students will recognize the various trends of the forest related sustainability promotion.
They understand the limits of silviculture in the North in comparison with the more southern regions.
The students understand both the material and immaterial elements of the forest-based value chains.
They understand the importance of the improved dialogue competence and the setting of the ethical codes of conduct related to forests.
Content
The course contains the basic premises of the Finnish and Central European silviculture and related ecological treatments and technological methods. Values and value chains of the utilization of forests will be discussed in the seminars covering the modern societal conversation on forests and sustainability related approaches. One training period includes the life-cycle analysis of wooden products and their links to low carbon society. Visits: An experimental forest, a forest farm, a small-scale nursery owned by a private family, a protected peatland, forest and bioenergy industries. Exercises: A hot-spot diary, value chain related to an operational modelling, scientific writing.
