• The student can identify and analyse forest ecosystem services in current and future conditions
• The student can identify and foresee current and future needs of society in relation to forest use
• The student can apply participatory planning methods in resolving conflicting objectives
• The student can communicate and negotiate with stakeholders to implement forestry activities
• The student is able to participate in the professional and public discussion about forest use

Sisältö

This educational unit is about current and future forest use and management based on the changing demands of society. During the course you will face the challenges of increasing involvement of various stakeholders and interest groups on forest ecosystem services. To resolve this participatory planning methods are needed to straighten out conflicting objectives.

The course wll be implemented between August and December 2023.

Material will be provided during the course.

Opetusmenetelmät

The course will consist of lectures, excursions, group work and independent study. The lectures will include visiting lectures from stakeholders presenting cases from their countries on social issues and parcipaition of communities in natural resource management.

The lecture topics include:
- ecosystem services
- current and future needs of the socitey in relation to forest use
- participatory planning processes
- stakeholder engagement

Excursions within North Karelia will present ecosystem services and community engagement in natural resource management.

Harjoittelu- ja työelämäyhteistyö

The course will include examples from stakeholders as well as excursions to relevant organisations.

Kansainvälisyys

The course is part of the INVEST specialisation studies (Forestry Adaptation to a Changing Environment - FACE)

The course is 5 ECTS which is equivalent to 135 hours. The approximate share of student activity is:
Lectures: 40 hours
